Welcome to Sports Medicine Scotland

SPORTS MEDICINE is a new full speciality of the Royal College of Surgeons. Fully qualified medical doctors can train in various specialities such as surgery or obstetrics and sport medicine is a new equivalent speciality.

A SPORTS MEDICINE PHYSICIAN is a doctor that has undertaken extensive speciality training in all aspects of sport, exercise, and medicine and its complications and injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments. Orthopaedic Surgeons concentrate on surgical operations of the skeleton but approximately 90% of injuries do not require surgery.

SPORT MEDICINE PHYSICIANS are not surgeons but should be the best first point of contact for injuries for accurate diagnosis, imaging treatment and co-ordinated treatment plans with physiotherapists (and expedited orthopaedic surgery if required).

SPORT MEDICINE PHYSICIAN are also focused on preventing injuries by strengthening weaknesses, correcting imbalances and enhancing performance.
